President's Message

Ir Ian CHUNG

President

In last year’s message, I said, “2020 is simply unprecedented.” This year, 2021, it is remarkable. Despite some of us may be getting anxious in anticipation of the borders reopening, we are surely getting used to the new normal, and wearing masks as part of our daily outfit. At HKIHT, signs of ‘back-to-the-new-normal’ are evidently shown by the number of events that have taken place in the past 12 months when compared to a year ago. Allow me to boldly say, “we are ready to take on new opportunities laid before us.”

The Chief Executive’s 2021 Policy Address unveiled the vision of future Hong Kong, and the announcement of Northern Metropolis Development Strategy therein calls for our industry to gear up and think ahead of how we can contribute to this new paradigm for a new future and in building a liveable city for Hong Kong. As the Northern Metropolis will be the most strategically important area in Hong Kong that facilitates the development integration with Shenzhen and our connection with the Greater Bay Area, our institution should be at the forefront to enable the experience and expertise of our members and their companies to be a contributing force to this important development.

In December, HKIHT will host its event of the year, “Hong Kong Institution of Highways & Transportation Regional Conference 2021 (2021 五省一市兩區公路交通技術論壇)”, under the theme of “Sustainable Infrastructure - Entering a New Era.” We anticipate the leading professionals, researchers and scholars joining us at the conference will share their insights and dive into a discussion that could lead us the way forward in embedding resilience and flexibility in our practice and solution offerings, hence allowing us to deliver more future-ready and sustainable infrastructure to the region.

In the year ahead, HKIHT will continue to work closely with local governments and our sister institutions across Mainland China and overseas, and will establish new connections and build new relationships. We look at these opportunities to collaborate and further enhance our capabilities in delivering the highways and transportation infrastructure for the future.

2022 is soon approaching, let me conclude this message by thanking you for being part of HKIHT and sharing our passion for the industry. I wish everyone a safe holiday season ahead. Let’s look forward to a more vibrant, optimistic and robust year.

Ian CHUNG
